Artist Statement

I use photography to examine the divine connection between my identity as a transgender person, as a Celtic Pagan, and as a spiritual conduit. I draw influence from my Celtic heritage, the natural world, and personal spiritual experiences. I am interested in how we experience personal transitions. As a transgender person, I have experienced physical transition- but so has everyone else who has transitioned from childhood to adulthood through puberty. We move through the world in a constant state of transition, much like the seasons.

I embody Cernunnos, the Celtic God of transitions in my work. Cernunnos’ most sacred duty is guiding his followers through transitions in their lives, especially the transition from physical death and into the Otherworlds. Celtic Pagans believe in a continuous cycle of life, birth, growth, physical death, and reincarnation; these cycles mirror the seasonal transitions we experience throughout the year. I use photography to create windows into other worlds by focusing on moments of transition.

The Cernunnos Project is about the multidimensional being known as the all-seeing eye, Cernunnos. I explore who Cernunnos is, and my personal connection with him. In The Cernunnos Project I follow the deity as he moves through his home in the Otherworld and into contemporary times. My work investigates what Cernunnos would do in this urban world.

My practice is solitary, ritualistic and lead by intuition. I make connections between Celtic Paganism, symbology, Shamanism, and spiritual traditions that reflect the interconnectedness of all life. I study spiritual texts, read Celtic Mythology, and explore Shamanism. My practice is an open conversation with Cernunnos about how I experience my spiritual path in the contemporary world.
